Hethel’s Future Bright: Lotus Confirms No Closure Plans

Date:

The future of Hethel’s Lotus factory looks bright, as the company has confirmed it has no plans for closure. This reassurance was given to Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds during an urgent meeting, calming widespread concerns about a potential move of production to the US and safeguarding 1,300 jobs in Norfolk.
The Department for Business and Trade stated that Reynolds “was reassured by management that they are committed to their UK operations and have no plans to close their Hethel plant.” This clear statement brings stability after a period of uncertainty, particularly after Lotus paused production in mid-May due to US tariffs.
Lotus is poised to resume operations as US tariffs on car imports are set to decrease from 25% to 10% on Monday. This reduction significantly improves the economic viability of exports from Hethel, where 60% of Emira sports cars are sent to the US market. Lotus itself has declared “the UK is the heart of the Lotus brand.”
Despite earlier discussions by Lotus Technology’s CEO about exploring US “localisation plans,” the immediate outcome ensures Hethel’s continued role as a vital manufacturing hub. The government’s broader support for the automotive sector further underpins this positive outlook.
