In the face of escalating security concerns, Taiwan and the United States are deepening their collaboration within the defense industry, marked by increased investment and enhanced supply chain integration. At the Taiwan-US Defense Industry Forum held in Taipei, retired US Army General Charles Flynn commended Taiwan’s strides in ramping up defense spending, modernizing its military forces, and embracing advanced technologies. Flynn highlighted that these efforts underscore Taiwan’s firm dedication to safeguarding its security and sovereignty.
The forum witnessed an unprecedented turnout from the United States, with a record-setting delegation of 41 representatives. This surge in participation underscores the growing interest of American defense firms in Taiwan’s burgeoning defense market. Flynn pointed out that the rising number of involved companies signals expanding business opportunities and emphasizes the urgency driven by regional security issues.
James Huang, Chairman of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council, remarked that the bilateral relationship is evolving beyond just traditional arms sales, moving toward a comprehensive strategic industrial partnership. He emphasized Taiwan’s prowess in semiconductors, information and communications technology, and low-Earth-orbit satellite systems, which can be leveraged to enhance defense applications such as drones, AI-integrated systems, and secure communication networks. Huang asserted that Taiwan’s manufacturing excellence and system integration capabilities are well-aligned with advanced US defense technologies, paving the way for significant collaborative opportunities.
Rupert Hammond-Chambers, President of the US-Taiwan Business Council, noted that the cooperation aims not only to fulfill Taiwan’s defense requirements but also to bolster broader global supply chains. He described the fusion of US defense innovation with Taiwan’s technology sector as a robust foundation for cultivating a competitive defense industry ecosystem.
In addition to strengthening ties with the United States, Taiwan is also expanding its defense engagements with European partners. Representatives from Ukraine, Poland, and the Czech Republic visited Taiwan earlier this month to explore defense technology collaboration and future reconstruction projects, including potential partnerships in the drone and IT sectors. Officials highlighted that these initiatives are part of broader efforts to enhance defense supply chain resilience and fortify technological cooperation in response to shifting geopolitical landscapes.
