Powerful Winter Storm Set to Impact Much of the US With Snow, Rain and Strong Winds

Date:

A powerful winter storm is sweeping eastward across the United States, bringing a wide range of hazardous weather conditions including heavy snow, freezing rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds. Meteorologists say the system is driven by an intense cyclone affecting different regions in varying ways.
In the upper Midwest and Great Lakes, heavy snowfall and strengthening winds are creating dangerous travel conditions, with warnings of whiteouts and possible blizzard-like conditions. Snow accumulation in some areas is expected to exceed a foot, with even higher totals near Lake Superior.
Meanwhile, the southern United States is bracing for severe thunderstorms as a sharp cold front moves through the region. The front is expected to end a period of unusually warm weather, replacing it with much colder temperatures and strong northerly winds. Cities that recently experienced record-breaking warmth are forecast to see dramatic temperature drops within a day or two.
The Northeast is expected to see a mix of snow and freezing rain, while strong winds are likely to affect large portions of the eastern US. Forecasters say the storm will continue to intensify as cold air from Canada clashes with lingering warm air over the south.
The system comes during one of the busiest travel periods of the year, following widespread flight delays and cancellations in recent days. Authorities are urging residents to prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions and potential travel disruptions over the next several days.
