Tech Innovations Targeted by Trump, Rubio Allies Amid Cuba Sanctions Escalation

Date:

The intensifying U.S. sanctions on Cuba are reshaping business dynamics, as American investors and political allies see new opportunities across various sectors on the island. With foreign companies scaling back due to the Trump administration’s expanded sanctions, U.S. interests are stepping in, particularly in mining, tourism, and logistics.

Cuba’s mining sector has become a focal point, especially after Canadian company Sherritt International faced increased scrutiny over its operations. Two American groups have reportedly proposed to acquire its stake in a nickel and cobalt mining venture. One proposal is linked to Ray Washburne, a businessman with close ties to former President Trump, while the other involves Texas investor Albert Huddleston, also associated with the White House.

Similarly, the tourism and real estate sectors in Cuba are attracting American interest as European hotel chains reduce their involvement. Executives connected to the Trump Organization have returned to explore potential ventures, signaling a shift as international competitors reassess their positions.

The logistics sector is also witnessing a boost, with a marked increase in oil exports from Florida and Texas to Cuba’s private sector. Florida-based shipping companies are capitalizing on the situation as international carriers face hurdles in maintaining their operations with Cuba.

In Washington, lobbying firms with connections to prominent figures like Secretary of State Marco Rubio are positioning themselves to influence Cuba’s economic trajectory. These organizations are advising businesses with investments in Cuba and strategizing on energy development and asset compensation for properties seized by the Cuban government.

Meanwhile, Cuban-American groups are preparing for potential political and economic shifts, contemplating strategies to draw substantial private investment from Cuban exiles. As Washington’s pressure on Cuba intensifies, the competition among U.S. businesses and investors to shape the island’s economic future is becoming increasingly evident.
