The United States Mint has commenced the production of a new $1 commemorative coin, showcasing former President Donald Trump, as part of the festivities commemorating the nation’s 250th anniversary. The coin, set to be released this fall, represents a significant addition to the Mint’s lineup of special currency celebrating notable milestones in American history.
According to the US Treasury Department, the design of this coin received approval earlier this year. However, the version now being produced features some modifications from the original concept, most notably a gold-colored finish rather than being made of solid gold. Despite these changes, the essence of the design remains focused on celebrating the country’s enduring legacy of liberty and patriotism.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized that the coin reflects America’s core values and its unwavering commitment to freedom. The obverse of the coin prominently displays a portrait of Donald Trump, accompanied by the word “LIBERTY,” the dates “1776–2026,” and the phrase “IN GOD WE TRUST.” On the reverse, the classic bald eagle from the Great Seal of the United States is featured, along with the country’s motto, “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
Despite its symbolic intent, the announcement of this coin has sparked some controversy. Critics point to a longstanding federal law that generally prohibits living presidents from being depicted on US currency. Nevertheless, Treasury officials have asserted that the Secretary of the Treasury holds the authority to approve such commemorative coin issues under certain circumstances, which has been exercised in this instance.
