With a meeting of envoys called, the EU warns Trump’s tariff threat might cause urgent action to protect European interests. A territorial ultimatum has sparked a fierce response as European leaders have rejected President Trump’s attempt to use tariffs to acquire Greenland. Officials have summoned envoys for an emergency session on Sunday to address the situation.
The rhetoric from Brussels has been firm. EU leaders Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa issued a joint message emphasizing that the European Union would remain coordinated. They declared a commitment to upholding sovereignty, signaling that they will not be coerced by trade threats.
The tariff plan targets specific European economies. Starting February 1, a 10% tariff is set to hit goods from Denmark, France, Germany, and the UK. Trump has threatened to raise this to 25% on June 1 if the US does not acquire Greenland, effectively holding trade relations hostage.
The EU also clarified the context of military exercises in the Arctic. Leaders stated that the Danish drills were pre-coordinated responses to security needs and pose no threat to anyone. They highlighted that a secure Arctic is in the best interest of both Europe and the United States.
Affirming their support for Denmark, EU leaders noted that dialogue between the US and the Kingdom of Denmark started last week. However, they stressed that the bloc must remain vigilant and united. The upcoming emergency meeting will determine the collective steps the EU will take.
