Under the leadership of President Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico is revitalizing its security collaboration with the United States, moving past the strained ties that characterized the era of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Central to this renewed partnership is Security Cabinet coordinator Omar García Harfuch, who has been actively engaging with top U.S. officials to enhance intelligence sharing and combat organized crime. Mexican officials note that these efforts have led to faster information exchanges, enabling more rapid responses to criminal activities.
Since Sheinbaum took office, Mexican authorities have made significant strides, reporting numerous arrests, substantial weapons and drug seizures, and the dismantling of thousands of secret drug labs. The country has also expedited the extradition of high-profile criminal suspects to the U.S., alongside observing a notable decrease in fentanyl trafficking. This cooperative shift is a marked departure from the previous administration, which had closed a U.S. intelligence unit in Mexico and imposed stricter controls on foreign security agents. The situation further deteriorated after former Defense Minister Salvador Cienfuegos was arrested in 2020, and disputes emerged over organized crime investigations.
Tensions between the two countries were exacerbated in 2024 when allegations surfaced linking drug-trafficking funds to López Obrador’s 2006 presidential campaign. Although these claims did not lead to formal charges, they further eroded trust between Mexico and the U.S. authorities. Despite these challenges, the current administration under Sheinbaum emphasizes the importance of sovereignty and mutual respect in its dealings with the U.S., consistently advocating for these principles.
While the relationship is cautiously improving, Sheinbaum has been vocal about the need for respectful collaboration that honors Mexico’s sovereignty and national interests. Her government remains wary of what it perceives as attempts by U.S. officials to influence or divide Mexico’s security leadership. Nonetheless, the mutual focus on combating organized crime continues to foster a cooperative spirit between the two nations, even as Mexico insists on maintaining its autonomy in intelligence operations.
