South African lawyer Navi Pillay has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, recognized for her unwavering dedication to promoting human rights, international law, and peace initiatives. Pillay’s distinguished career includes supporting the anti-apartheid movement and investigating crimes against humanity, underscoring the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s emphasis on the significance of international law amid increasing pressures on global legal institutions.
Despite US President Donald Trump’s final appeal for the Nobel Peace Prize—citing his administration’s efforts in resolving or preventing international conflicts—he was not selected. Trump has frequently asserted his administration’s role in ending eight conflicts, referencing US-led negotiations concerning the Israel-Hamas war and tensions between Iran and Israel. Additionally, his efforts to mediate a resolution to Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine have been emphasized.
However, several significant conflicts remain unresolved. Iran’s involvement in regional wars persists, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine shows little progress toward a durable peace. Trump’s proposed recovery plan for Gaza faces challenges, including disputes over Israeli troop withdrawals and the disarmament of Hamas.
Trump’s frustration over not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize is not new; he has previously criticized the committee’s decisions. Historically, four US presidents—Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Jimmy Carter, and Barack Obama—have received the prestigious award. Despite this, Trump has garnered other forms of recognition for his peace efforts. In December 2025, FIFA President Gianni Infantino awarded him the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize. Furthermore, in January 2026, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize recipient, symbolically presented her award to Trump.
The Nobel Institute has clarified its policies, stating that the Nobel Peace Prize cannot be revoked, shared, or transferred once announced, reinforcing the finality of the committee’s decision.
