The Selma Housing Authority and Metro Digital Group, along with a coalition of educational and civic leaders, have unveiled plans for the Selma Digital Innovation Center. This ambitious redevelopment project aims to propel Selma, a city of historical significance, into a more technologically advanced and economically robust future. The initiative will transform a historic building at 528 Washington Avenue into a hub for next-generation workforce development, entrepreneurship, and digital innovation, serving students, young adults, entrepreneurs, and the wider community.
Collins Pettaway Jr., President of Progress Partners for Selma, emphasized that the project is more than just a building upgrade. “We are creating future opportunity infrastructure for our community,” Pettaway stated, highlighting the necessity for Selma to adapt to the rapidly evolving digital economy. The center will house facilities for gaming and esports, creator and streaming studios, AI and STEM labs, workforce development classrooms, and media production spaces. It will also offer entrepreneurship programs and community event areas.
Metro Digital Group, which operates nationally with a focus on gaming, STEM, and digital engagement initiatives, will lead the development and ecosystem deployment of the project. Shaon Berry, President of Metro Digital Group, expressed honor in partnering with local entities on this transformative initiative. Berry noted that the project is aligned with Metro’s mission to create inclusive technology ecosystems that foster economic mobility and workforce readiness.
Local leaders, including Selma Councilwoman Lesia James, view the project as a symbol of economic development and community revitalization. “The future of Selma depends on partnerships like this,” James said, recognizing the collaborative effort between local government, education, and housing sectors. Progress Partners Vice President John Deamer added that the initiative is designed to meet students and residents where they are, providing exposure to future-facing industries and career paths.
Slated for design and construction planning in June 2026, with an opening anticipated in 2027, the Selma Digital Innovation Center is actively seeking partnerships and support from technology providers and philanthropic collaborators. Roger Blackmon, Director of Technology for Progress Partners, expressed excitement about the center’s advanced technological spaces, which he believes will inspire both young and old learners. Established in November 2025, Progress Partners for Selma continues to drive efforts in economic development, education, and community pride.
