Austin Arena Bid Scheme May Land Former Sports CEO Behind Bars

Date:

Timothy Leiweke, a leading executive once at the helm of teams like the LA Kings and Toronto Raptors, has been indicted for his alleged role in a bid-rigging plot tied to the University of Texas’s Moody Center.

Federal prosecutors claim Leiweke coordinated with the CEO of Legends Hospitality to ensure Oak View Group would win the project without real competition. The deal reportedly involved Legends stepping back in exchange for subcontracting promises—promises Leiweke allegedly never kept.

With the Moody Center completed in 2022 and generating steady revenue, the financial success now clashes with legal scrutiny. The Department of Justice alleges the arrangement broke antitrust laws meant to protect public institutions and taxpayers.

The case could lead to significant prison time and marks a dramatic fall from grace for Leiweke, a once-celebrated executive in global sports business circles.
