TOKYO—Hotel Okura Co., Ltd. has revealed plans to launch The Okura Resort Hakone Gora in 2029, marking the brand’s first resort property in Japan. Developed by Nishimatsu Construction and operated under The Okura Resort banner, the new destination will rise in one of Japan’s most iconic hot spring areas.
Nestled in the lush landscapes of Gora, the resort will offer sweeping mountain views, access to Hakone’s natural wonders, and proximity to local cultural events such as the celebrated summer festival. Hakone attracts close to 20 million visitors every year, drawn to its hot springs, museums, and year-round scenery.
Designed by award-winning designer Gwenael Nicolas of Curiosity, the resort embraces a “Forest Hideaway” aesthetic, blending warm tones, natural materials, and floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the surroundings. All 58 guest rooms will feature private open-air baths using Owakudani Hot Spring water.
Dining highlights include a fine dining restaurant with teppanyaki, along with a lounge and bar where guests can unwind. The property will also offer a large indoor bathing area, dry and mist saunas, and treatment rooms, rounding out its wellness offerings.
Hotel Okura President Toshihiro Ogita notes the brand’s goal: to bring its signature omotenashi hospitality to one of Japan’s most beloved destinations. Construction is underway, with the opening planned for 2029.
