A row over an ad featuring Ronald Reagan has led president Donald Trump to pull the plug on Canada trade talks, alleging “interference” in US legal matters.
The ad, from Ontario, used a 1987 clip of Reagan saying tariffs “hurt every American worker.” Trump blasted the ad as “fake.”
He claimed the ad was an attempt to influence US supreme court hearings on his 35% tariffs. “Canada cheated and got caught,” he posted.
The ad has also been criticized by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation for using “selective audio” to “misrepresent” the full speech.
The suspension of talks, confirmed by secretary of state Marco Rubio, jeopardizes a c$3.6 billion daily trade relationship.
