Trump Selects Hung Cao to Drive Naval Innovation as Permanent Secretary

Date:

President Donald Trump has put forward Hung Cao, currently serving as the acting Navy Secretary, for the permanent position of Secretary of the Navy. This nomination comes four months after the departure of John Phelan from the role and now awaits Senate confirmation. Cao, a retired Navy captain with 25 years of service, has a distinguished military background. His career includes significant roles such as a special operations officer with deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, alongside experience as a diver and explosive ordnance disposal officer.

Trump has expressed strong support for Cao, calling him a “true warrior,” and has urged the Senate to expedite the confirmation process. Cao, acknowledging the nomination as an honor, has emphasized his focus on enhancing shipbuilding efforts and reinforcing homeland security. His leadership priorities have centered around shipbuilding, modernization, and integrating artificial intelligence during his tenure as acting secretary.

The nomination is set against a backdrop of challenges facing the Navy, particularly as it endures scrutiny over the pressures on its personnel amid ongoing tensions with Iran. The extended deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln has raised significant concerns among lawmakers regarding crew fatigue, mental health issues, and shortages of essential supplies. These operational strains underscore the critical period Cao would navigate if confirmed.

In addition to these challenges, Cao’s nomination aligns with broader shifts within U.S. military leadership, highlighted by the recent resignation of Army Secretary Dan Driscoll. If confirmed, Cao will assume permanent leadership of the Navy and Marine Corps during a time marked by increased operational demands and a strategic push to enhance U.S. naval capabilities.
