The Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy (GTRLC) in Traverse City, Michigan, is set to enhance its energy resilience and sustainability efforts, thanks to a newly funded battery storage project. This initiative will integrate a 1.15 MW battery energy storage system with GTRLC’s existing 185 kW solar photovoltaic system, allowing more efficient use of renewable energy by storing solar-generated electricity for later use.
This project, supported by Congressionally Directed Spending and administered by the U.S. Department of Energy, marks a significant step forward in local energy innovation. The funding approval enables the commencement of procurement and manufacturing phases, with installation and commissioning expected by the second quarter of 2027. By leveraging Advanced Battery Concepts’ (ABC) GreenSeal® bipolar lead battery technology, the project aims to deliver safer and more recyclable energy storage solutions.
ABC, based in Michigan, has developed the GreenSeal® technology to use less lead while maintaining the safety and recyclability of traditional lead-based batteries. This innovation underscores Michigan’s pivotal role in the domestic energy storage supply chain, as the batteries will be developed and manufactured within the state. The technology will be housed in three commercial-scale BOX-BE™ energy storage enclosures, designed to optimize the use and storage of renewable energy.
The project’s backing from the U.S. Department of Energy highlights the growing importance of energy storage in the transition to renewable power sources. By enabling GTRLC to harness and store energy more effectively, the initiative not only supports local sustainability efforts but also sets a precedent for similar projects nationwide. As the world increasingly turns to renewable energy, innovations like ABC’s GreenSeal® technology are crucial for ensuring reliable and efficient energy systems.
